Cinematographic Study Of Ritwik Ghatak

Updated: May 22, 2021

Ritwik Ghatak was one of Pioneering and prominent Filmmakers of Bengal , Contemporary of Satyajit Ray & Mrinal Sen.. During the 1960s, Ghatak directed a trilogy which deeply reflected the agony of the partition of Bengal at the grassroots. Starting with Meghe Dhaka Tara, based on the lives of a ‘bhadralok’ (gentry) Hindu family living in a refugee camp on the outskirts of what was then Calcutta, Ghatak continued his commentary on the political divide with Komal Gandhar and Subarnarekha.

Being a student of Cinema right from FTII days I have been deeply influenced by Ritwik Ghatak and his films . Every time I revisit his films it makes me emotional and deeply inspires me to know more about the Master . He is indeed a great Filmmaker with a fantastic understanding of Cinematic Language & Craft..

This is an humble attempt to understand & analyse Ritwik Ghatak's film "Subarnarekha " from a Narrative & Cinematographic standpoint
